How to Register for Open Play

Registration is a 2-step process:

Step 1: Reserve your seat by RSVPing "Yes" to the event in the TeamReach app.

Step 2: Complete your registration by paying through the Open Play booking page on my website.

Your registration is not complete until both steps have been completed and payment has been received.

How We Play

Our Open Play is a little different than a traditional just come and play open play game—and that's part of what makes it so much fun!

We play using National Mah Jongg League rules with a friendly point system that adds a little excitement while keeping the atmosphere welcoming for players of all skill levels. Whether you're playing competitively or just for fun, everyone is encouraged to learn, improve, and enjoy the game.

How We Score

Each table will receive a scorecard to keep track of points throughout Open Play.

  • Winning Hand: The winner earns the point value listed on the National Mah Jongg League card for the hand they complete.

    • Example: If the completed hand is worth 25 points on the card, the winner receives 25 points.

  • Self-Pick Bonus: If you draw your own winning tile (self-pick), earn an additional 10 points.

  • Jokerless Bonus: If your winning hand contains no jokers, earn an additional 10 points.

  • Wall Game: If no player wins and the game ends in a wall, each player receives 10 points.

At the end of Open Play, we'll total the scores to see who comes out on top!

Table Etiquette

To help everyone have a great experience, please follow these table guidelines:

  • Draw tiles from the correct end of the wall.

  • Draw and call tiles only when it's your turn.

  • Only call "Mahjong!" when you have a legal winning hand.

  • Maintain the correct number of tiles throughout the game.

  • Make only valid exposures.

  • Be respectful and encouraging to everyone at the table.

  • Good sportsmanship is expected at all times. Rude or unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated.

How do I register?

Registration is a 2-step process:

How do I pay?

After reserving your spot in TeamReach, you will complete payment through my website. This secures your seat and confirms your registration.

What happens if Open Play is full?

Please join the waitlist in TeamReach. As spots become available, I will contact players in the order they joined the waitlist. If a spot opens for you, you will complete payment through my website to confirm your registration.

Do I need to bring a Mahjong set?

No! I provide everything you need to play, including Mahjong sets, racks, mats, and pushers.

The only exception is if you are signed up as a Table Designer. In that case, you will bring your own Mahjong set and table décor.

Should I bring a National Mah Jongg League card?

Yes! Please bring your current 2026 National Mah Jongg League card. We play using official National Mah Jongg League rules and do not use blanks.

Can beginners attend Open Play?

Open Play is best suited for players who already know the basics of American Mahjong.

If you have recently completed Mahjong 101 or have a basic understanding of the game, you are welcome to join us. Don’t be intimidated if you haven’t played with points yet—players of all skill levels are welcome. Beginner-friendly tables are available for those who prefer a slower pace with extra support.

What is your cancellation policy?

There is a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel, please notify me as soon as possible so your spot can be offered to someone on the waitlist.

Cancellations made within 24 hours of the event are not eligible for a refund.
